$2 Million Raised in 2 Days for James Van Der Beek’s Family on GoFundMe

The passing of James Van Der Beek at 48 prompted an immediate surge of public support. A GoFundMe campaign set up for his wife and six children crossed the $2 million mark within 48 hours, illustrating how deeply audiences connected with him and the financial strain left in the wake of his battle with colorectal cancer.

Van Der Beek, who became a household name as Dawson Leery on “Dawson’s Creek,” had been privately battling colorectal cancer for three years. His experience draws attention to the rising incidence of the disease among younger adults—a trend that has alarmed medical experts nationwide.

Just two months prior, he appeared on NBC News. In an interview with Craig Melvin, he shared a health update, expressing cautious optimism while acknowledging the ongoing challenges of his treatment journey.

“I feel much, much better than I did a couple of months ago,” he said.

He added, “It’s been a longer journey than I ever thought it would be. It’s required more of me — more patience, more discipline, more strength than I knew I had. I knew I was strong — I didn’t know I was this strong.”

Despite that hopeful outlook, the disease ultimately claimed his life.

GoFundMe Campaign Reaches $2.1 Million

Instagram | @vanderjames | The fundraiser gives James Van Der Beek’s family financial stability and hope as they rebuild after a long and costly cancer battle.

A fundraising campaign launched shortly after Van Der Beek’s death quickly gained traction. Shared through Instagram Stories by both James and his wife Kimberly, the GoFundMe page initially sought help covering extensive medical bills related to his cancer treatment.

By Thursday morning, the fundraiser had already collected $1.247 million in donations. By Friday morning, that figure had surged to $2.1 million, marking a sharp increase in support within just 24 hours.

The campaign description stated: “In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future.” It noted that the prolonged cancer fight had drained family finances, leaving them struggling to remain in their home and maintain stability for the children’s education.

The fundraiser emphasized that contributions would help cover:

1. Outstanding medical expenses
2. Household bills
3. Daily living costs
4. Ongoing educational needs for the six children

“Every donation, no matter the size, will help Kimberly and her family find hope and security as they rebuild their lives,” the page read.

Kimberly shared the fundraising link on Instagram, writing, “My friends created this link to support me and our children during this time. With gratitude and a broken heart.”

Safeguards Around the Fund

A spokesperson for GoFundMe confirmed that the company is working directly with the campaign organizer to ensure the funds reach the intended beneficiary.

“We are working with the organizer to ensure funds safely reach the intended beneficiary,” the spokesperson said.

They also clarified that the funds are currently being held securely by the company’s payment processor and are designated for Van Der Beek’s wife.

In December 2025, Van Der Beek made his final public appearance on NBC. During that same month, he auctioned personal memorabilia from the filming of “Dawson’s Creek” to help manage medical expenses and support his family.

His death was announced by Kimberly on Instagram. She wrote, “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning.”

“He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time. Those days will come.”

“For now, we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”

Colon cancer diagnoses among adults under 50 have steadily increased in recent years. Van Der Beek’s case draws attention to this troubling pattern and the financial challenges families often face during extended treatment.

Public response to the GoFundMe campaign underscores both the deep connection audiences felt with the actor and the broader awareness surrounding colorectal cancer in younger patients. In just 48 hours, more than $2 million was raised — a reflection of both collective grief and collective support.

The campaign continues to serve as financial assistance for Kimberly and the couple’s six children as they adjust to life after his passing.
